Magical Glass Bombillas Available in Oakland CA

Salutations and Namaste,

If you drink Yerba Mate or any loose leaf tea regularly, read on!

My friend that introduced me to Yerba Mate 7 years ago normally creates these beautifully intricate wire wrapped pendents with semi precious and precious crystals, gems, stones/etc. He had the inspiration to create glass bombillas and infuse them with his mastery of wire wrapping, creating a masterpiece idea.

He was passing through the Bay Area recently so I got him to finally make me a batch of these beauties as I've attempted for over 4 years to get his "in the flow artist self" to do so. It was my intention to attain some of these to have available for friends but since I got 15 I thought I would put it out to the community to see if there was some interest.

Below is a list with all the crystals, gems, stones that are in each piece and a sliding scale rate of what I'm asking for them. Keep in mind these are far more worth the value than what I'm offering them for as I got a brotherly hook up and a bulk order discount.

It is impossible to capture the beauty of these pieces but I've done my best through the following videos of the 1st five pieces on the list.

Ok, so we all know that you can drink mate out of a gourd through a bombilla. We know that some people brew it in handy little tea bags. I even use my coffee maker to make up large quantities to have over ice. What I'm wondering is how other people are brewing and using mate. Here's your chance to share your secrets. It's time to share your favorite use for mate. What else do you mix with it? Do you have a mate cookie recipe? Does it keep dogs off your lawn? Might it be a fossil fuel alternative?

Help needed with info on mate gourd

Help needed with Mate gourd info
I could use some help from the "seasoned" Mate users: I tried seasoning my gourd I got in Argentina, and used mate & lemongrass
mixture for the first 12 hrs after the scraping (not much came up) I noticed that the gourd appeared to have sevetal cracks. (is this normal) I then did the second 12 hours with a Old brazilian matte, and when emptied 1/2 the Gourd had turned an ugly green. Is this normal? Is it safe to use? or did I get ripped off at a tourist shop?
Thank you so much for any help/info you can give me.
Ed

the mate itch

Has anyone else get this itch right under the skin on your arm from drinking too much mate.
It's a crazy feeling. Like you can't stop itching. I've tried everything to make it stop.
Energy healers giving me a reading, Too funny, I can't even repeat it, becuase it's just too much.
Icing it , itch creams. The only thing happened was unfortanaly had to look at my habitual pattern.
Mate was it, so I stopped for awhile, did a cleanse and it went away.
So the other day ran into a friend who I noticed itching her arm. Got the itch I say?
She said oh my god! I can't stand it, it 's driving me mad. She said she didn't know what was happening and
she was going to contact a dermatologist. I said are you drinking mate, she said yes, everyday all day long.
Ding Ding Ding Ding. I told her it was the tea. She was super bummed. She couldn't imagine not drinking it.
Ayurvedic, says it's digestive fire. We were curious if anyone else got the Itch?
Let me know!

New Organic Mate Beer called Mateveza!

Super tasty, I have had a few bottles in the last month and I love it!

Let me know what you think... it's starting to be marketed in CA.

Commercial Description from the website:

An organic pale ale brewed with yerba maté, source of the ancient South American tea prized for its energizing and nutritional properties. Mateveza showcases the pairing of organic yerba maté and cascade hops. Yerba maté’s earthy, herbal notes are the perfect compliment to the crisp, citrusy character of the cascade hops. Mateveza is brewed and bottled by Butte Creek Brewing Company, a gold medal winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® that has been brewing organic since 1997.

Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?

I make a vodka infusion with a cup and a half to two cups of bulk mate’ to a liter of vodka.

We make a mate’ mind eraser by layering the mate’ vodka with Kaluha and soda water in a tall Collins glass. On slower nights we’ll do two or three while working and it never fails to give us all a happy little buzz that certainly can’t be accounted for by caffeine alone. It feels like the beginning of a very weak hit of E.

I’ve poked around on the Internet and haven’t found any good answers.

Any ideas here folks?

A friend of mine just came back from Brazil and reports that people in the area where he traveled were preparing their mate with a lukewarm water soak first (I didn't catch whether they threw the water away or dumped hot water on top after the soak).
Can anyone elaborate on the various ways it's prepared in the various South American countries that do it?

Best way to make exprss mate' - is anyone allready doing this?

Ok so I hear allot of people out there are pre-soaking the mate in cold then adding the hot. Yes of course we know
pre-soaking in cold is a for sure BUT - here is the way I do it and you only need one pot.

In pot add mate' and all the water you will need for your drink.
Now put it on the burner and turn it on med.
So now your mate is soaking in cold water and your water is heating at the same time... WOW - a revolution!
Then stick your finger in 5 mins later to make sure your mate' is at the desired temp.
Once at right temp take off burner
note: for those of you with electric burners - don't leave it on the burner and turn burner off or else your mate continues to heat
Now let sit for 5 mins - 8mins and strain our use bombilla.

Ok you got stong ass - FAST! double check!

Life is good

dont forget the yoga

best wishes -

Why by less than 5 lbs at a time?

Helo Mate' Lovers,

I have been drinking the stuff in moderation for years now. I drink mabye 2 medium strength cups a day. It makes me feel alive and able to keep up with life on 3D earth as we know it.

So after some time of buying a half pund here and a half pound there I asked my local co-op how much it is to buy a larger quantity at a time.

I had the offer to buy 5 or 10 lbs at a time. I went with 5 as 10 was just to huge. It cost me $32 for the 5 lb bag of EcoTeas brand Mate' (Guaki...no thanks... to much stem for us oldschool mate' heads). So that breaks down to $6.40 a lb. I was previously buying it for around $10.99 a lb. Huge Savings!

No weather you lke EcoTeas, Guaki, or whatever you can do this.

I would suggest it to anyone on a budget who loves the hell out of mate'. It feels great to know you have 5 lbs of it just sitting there... is that wierd... lol

Blessingz
Yerba Mate Ointment?

My mom lives by a Mexican family that makes an ointment for nerve damage and arthritis. It's topical and applied with a cotton ball. I put some on my sciatic nerve area and had instant relief!! For the life of me I cannot find the recipe online and the family seems unwilling to relinquish their recipe. Everything I read is about drinking it not applying it.
Does anyone know of a recipe for a topical solution using Yerba Mate?

Hey now. This tribe has been pretty quiet. I am very happy to see a whole tribe devoted to my favorite beverage. Anyway, last night I finally found a bag of loose Mendo Mate' Big Wave - yerba mate' and green tea blend. I was amazed at how many big stems were in the bag! Anyone else experienced this?

Hello all !!!
I just started drinking mate and am now wondering where it has been all my life:) I used to buy this stuff called Fruta Vida which is a crazy expensive drink that has Acai berries, Yerba Mate , and a couple of other ingredients that I can't remember. After I got tired of buying this stuff at $40.00 a pop I decided to try and make it myself, because after all it made me feel really good and it did help with my allergies. I began to experiment with some of the different ingredients and I just couldn't get it right. The only thing missing was the Yerba Mate. I didn't think that a tea could make that big of a difference, boy was I wrong. Now I just drink Mate. I drink it for several reasons. It makes me feel good, I never catch colds anymore, it's a great way to socialize with friends, and it tastes great.

So far I have tried Eco Teas and Mate Factor. I prefer Eco.

Brand new mate

I am back from the local spanish grocery, where I bought a bag of Taragui yerba mate. It is a complete set (edicion limitada written on the cardboard box) that includes a bag of yerba, a mate and a bombilla. Everything was $9.99.
The mate is made with a small carved pumpkin (or something similar) and it has a silver collar.
On the box there are suggestions on how to "cure" the mate (I guess before using it...
I don't speak spanish, so can anybody confirm if my translation makes any sense ? Here it is:

1. Fill the mate with yerba and wet it completely
2. Let it rest for two days while keeping the yerba moist
3. After two days, empty the mate by scratching all the yerba from the inside
4. Repeat this operation three more times

During the process, make sure the yerba is not fermenting because this may cause the mate to assume a bad flavor.

YUMMI!!!!!!!!!!

lately drinking yerba mate had made me bloated. i don't think its because i'm eating it too soon after meals, altho that could be it.
i'm really preferring coffee lately as it feels less yin, while sometimes the yerba can feel too yin, too leafy. does anyone notice this or experience the bloating?

Looking for a specific gourd

Hey everyone. I have looked up and down the web trying to find a gourd with a specific design. Seemingly, I cannot locate this. What I am searching for is a a gourde, be it natural, wooden, or leather wrapped... With a hint of silver. The design I am looking to obtain is the Hun Nab Ku symbol (Galactic Butterfly) found in mayan designs.

If I cannot locate this I may have to carve it myself out of a gourd I purchase. My art skills are not the greatest and I fear that I will not do a very clean job or even ruin the gourd.

Any leads or direction would be greatly appreciated.

So I am new to this. I have drank it out of a bottle and brewed the tea bags before. I introduced my partner to the bottled Guayaki and he likes it. So for valentines day I ordered this gourd http://www.yerbamateteagourd.com/YerbaMateMATESCarved.html and a bamboo bombilla. Now I would like to find the best organic Mate in the san francisco bay area. I live n berkeley, but can travel. I also would like any pointers on trying to get close to the mint guayaki flavor. Or other tips would also be good so I can give him the valentines he deserves...
http://www.mateveza.com/home.html

its funny because my man and i have brewed our own alcoholic beer with mate in it, but we never expected it to be on the market...

i'm about to take my very first sip of the exotic elixir... bottom's up!

So I brought some Mate to work and got everyone all excited.
One guy wanted to drink mate a lot, but didn't want to have to stop working to refil his gourd all the time. So he bought a french press. And now makes a super huge batch in it.

Do you guys think only jerks do things like that.
Or you can be a cool dude and do it at the same time?

I remember these Guyaki geeks at burning man, they were handing out lots of Mate- and like the rainbow gatherings, by the end of the event they had lots left over- they gave me a gross (a case).

Still I hadnt taken to Mate yet, the right moment hadnt come. It was not until after a trippy rave, where one feels the effects of indulgences early in the morning, when my roomie brewed up a big pot of strong Mate. I felt the synergistic affects when that Mate kicked, after that I was a believer.

I 've never been a Coffee man- something about that drink has a real nasty affect of inlfuencing me to bitter, angry ruminations...

So I brought a few Kilos for the rainbow gathering and will order more as the new arrivals come. Forget coffee camp- heres Mate camp! (Mum will be handling the coffee side of things I supose...)

So what does it take to get free Mate samples to give away- where do I sign up...?

I've begun mixing dried mint and chamomile flower in with my mate and have been enjoying this twist on my favorite beverage.

The chamomile especially adds a nice extra calming feeling. Nice -B

I am a teacher and my students saw me straining some mate and they asked me if they could eat the stems. I told them about this tribe, and they wanted me to post the question, "Can we eat the stems?" These students are 9 years old, and would love to hear back from you guys.

i am a chai baba, and brewing chai for everyone keeps me strong and healthy. ancient medicine promotes well-being. chai spices are warming, energizing, invigorating and anti-viral. perfect for winter. great for digestion. excellent aromatherapy. added bonus: many of the spices in chai are excellent aphrodesiacs!

don't buy oregon chai! it's mass produced, loaded with sugar and not at all healthy for your body (or the planet).

look for a local chai to drink, blend your own spices together or visit our website www.heartsongchai.com.... our web site has LOTS of good info. on the spices we use and their medicinal properties... and yes! we make a yerba mate chai!

in joy!

Has anyone (else) ever OD'd offa the mate? Once after refilling my gourd multiple times in a morning (honestly don't remember how many times) I started experiencing flashes in my peripheral vision. As it started happening more frequently, I had to lie down for a minute and keep my eyes closed. After it passed (later the same day) I felt pretty good. Now I take it in moderation (as all things should be). Hmmm

I just got finished curring (sp?) my first gourd. Is it normal for it to be turning green on the inside? this is the one I bought.. https://www.techxpress.net/guayaki.com/images/uploads/20060309225541.gif
And I mixed some mint tea leaves into my yerbamate and the consitency changed. Its more clumped at the bottom than floating and foamy. I didnt put much matter of fact I barely put any mint leaves in I mainly put the just the mint tea in there (w/ a few pieces of mint). Does this usually happen?

Using a mini-press at work

I recently bought a mini-press and treat the loose mate like I would coffee in a french-press. It works really well and I get a 3-4 mugs from a couple of tablespoons of loose mate in the press. The first mug, of course, is the most rich. It's also cool because you can see the color of your tea water, which is also useful for other teas.

Just sharing an FYI of what works for me well while at my desk job. It's relatively easy to do. Anyone else try this?

mate story from mujer gorda blog

thought I would repost this

Some people may ask: what does it mean to be Argentinean or Uruguayan? My husband Zacarias and I… we drink mate. Always, at any time. The times we were about to divorce, the times we had a new child, when he was fired, when Argentina got the soccer world championship, when the Twin Towers fell, when my mother died…

Between Zacarias and me there have been many days without morning kisses, weeks without talking to each other, months without touching each other, very long penniless years. But there has not been a single day in our marriage when we did not sit next to each other in silence to drink mate.

Mate is not a drink. Well, yes it is. It is liquid and goes through the mouth. But it is not just a drink. In this country no one drinks mate because he/she is thirsty. It is more like a tradition. Mate is exactly the opposite of TV. It makes you talk if you are with someone else and it makes you think if you are alone. When someone arrives to your home you first say “hello” and second “would you like to drink some mate?”

It happens in every household. Rich and poor households.

It happens among women gossiping and among immature or serious males. It happens among elders in a nursery home and among teenagers while they study or do drugs. It is the only thing that parents share with their teenagers without getting into fights. Liberals and conservatives, Peronists and anti-Peronists, share mate without asking (and they also do it at work). Winter or summer. It is the only thing that torturers and victims, good and not so good people have in common.

When you have a child you start giving him/her mate when he/she asks for it. Caio started asking for it at 5. Sofi at 9 and Nacho at 3. You give it to them not so hot, with lots of sugar, and they feel like grown-ups. You feel real pride the day that a part of your blood starts drinking mate.

After that, when times comes by, they will choose if they want to drink it bitter, sweet, very hot, cold, with orange, with herbs or with lemon juice.

When people do not know each other they ask: do you want to drink it sweet or bitter? And the other one answers: however you like it. I always write with my mate next to the computer. In Argentina, keyboards are full of yerba. Yerba is the only thing we always have, in every home. Always, with financial crises, inflation, hunger, dictatorships, democracy, in all our good and bad times there is always yerba. You never deny yerba if someone asks for it.

I am writing this today for a reason. When we arrived from the street today, Caio (our son) was drinking mate all by himself. He had never done it alone. Always with friends, family or siblings. Never alone. This is the only country in which the decision to stop being a child and become an adult arrives any given day. You do not need buying different clothes, going through passage rites, attending college or moving far away.
Here, we become adults the day we, for the first time, feel the need to drink mate all by ourselves; mate solo.

It is not by chance. The day that a kid puts the kettle on the stove and drinks his first mate without anyone else at home, at that moment, he has discovered he has a soul of his own. He might be scared to death or madly in love, or anything: but it is not a regular day. Caio probably does not know what the hell is going on with him. He probably won’t remember this day.

None of us remembers the day we started drinking mate all by ourselves.
But that was for sure an important day in our lives. We have revolutions happening inside. I do not remember my day, neither does my husband Zacarias. Nobody remembers. But today January 8th 2004, at 4 am Caio started having mate solo. His father Zacarias and I, peering at him from our hiding place at the end of the hallway, started to look at him with a lot of respect.

Need help with Spring Bombilla Tea Filter

I have purchased a spring-loaded bombilla since I heard this works the best. However, at the risk of being embarrased, I must say I cannot effectively use this bombilla without sucking mate grass through the straw. How does the spring work? Do you pull it out then push it in at a certain time? What purpose does the spring serve? No matter what, I get material into my mouth.

Please help me out. Gracias.

This is the spring bombilla I own, it came with no instructions:

Hey all, I just tried yerba mate for the first time the other day. I heard about from a cafe that serves it but never tried it from there. I got my yerba mate in a package someone sent me (we do random packages swaps). It was chai flavored and it was goood! So I ought some from whole foods (the package only had samples), I couldnt find chai flavored so I bought the orginal. I made it last night, not as good as chai but man I was buzzn. I dont remeber as much energy from the chai flavor.
Thing is its the next day now, and I still feel some energy and focus. I wanna stay in bed and be lazy a butt today but it wont let me. Is it just a coincidence or does it last that long?
Well thats my story...

hello
I have posted a few photos and 2 posts (below) that give you a sneak peak at my very unique and groovy coconut bows and cups as well as bamboo bombillas!
All of these came from the Big Island of Hawaii, and are made with organic products and lots of love and of course ALOHA. They are "sealed" lightly with a local bees wax and coconut oil.
some of the coconuts are decorated and some are natures own amazing patterns.
let me know if you have any questions or are interested in a purchase. the prices are very reasonable would love to share this love with you!!!!

Mate, cocoa, vanilla and sasparilla, I think thats the blend? Certain about the first 3 not sasparilla. Anyway a herb company in Eugene makes this blend and it is for real, very decadent and divine! Theyve been making this blend for a while and it wouldnt suprise me if Guyaki actually came across it and got the idea for their moca and vanilla blends and all those they now make. The only bummer is its only availble in the local natural food stores. The companies name is Dancing Dragon herbs. Might be able to find a link for them online?

Health benefits of roasted vs. unroasted Yerba Mate?

Hello,

I originally posted this in a tea tribe before I learned of this one. I haven't received any response, but I apologize if this posting here is inappropriate.

I've been looking for info concerning whether the health benefits and nutrients in Yerba Mate are from the roasted or unroasted form. I'm guessing unroasted. Does anyone know if roasting makes a difference?

Thanks,

the coconut bowls i posted pics of arent just for Mate....
they vary in size, and while i was on Big-Island we all would go out and find a coco, clean it up and that would be our primary dish for eating and drinking!!! they are lightweight, easy to clean and so cool!!!!!!!!!!!
they need to be cleaned with water then set out in the sun or in a warm spot to completley dry out in between washings....
so if you want to be Big Island cool get one of these great unique dishes!!!
much love

hello!
Ok there are now some pictures of my Mate Gear up on the photo Album!
They are a little fuzzy sorry :) But i think they get the picture through.
They are great! All made with Big Island love, they are "polished" with a mixture of local Big I beeswax and coconut oil, just a little to protect them from water and to make the color stand out.
They are for sale, and I do have TONS of the Bombillas. I have about 20 of the cups and bowls but they too are up for grabs! some of the cups/bowls have carvings and some have designs burnt in them by the sun (mag. Glass)!
if you are interested, give me a e-mail at nattymystic@hotmail.com or leave me a tribe message!
much love Family
happy day

I know we all love our little (sometimes extravigant) Mate rituals, but how many scale it down for work? What are your experiences with bringing in a Gourd and Bombilla on the first day at a new Job?

My exp:
Is that a Hooka? Dude, someone added some mud to your water. How long has that been sitting there? Now to avoid having to explain Mate' and it's origins/benefits to everyone I come across, I've go the in cup infusser route. I still start with some cold, then finish up with some hot. i still prefer working from work with my bombilla any day, and they wonder how I can be productive outside the office (of course tribe doesn't help:).

Thanks for listening,

Yerba Mate Effects Vs. Coffee...

So I'm a pretty overly sensitive person and always have been (lights/sounds/chemicals/people's energies and moods/foods etc) and have had some experiences with psychosis and such and last week I had a cup of coffee and it completely triggered a pretty significant hypersensitive reaction and pretty damn close to being a full on psychotic episode... So I'm wondering why yerba mate doesn't do this to me.
It's as if coffee makes me completely manic and at times paranoid and overly stimulated and yerba mate just makes me feel like I've injected my brain with a bit of a turbo boost.
Why doesn't yerba mate do the same thing to me as coffee does when I've been told that yerba mate has equal the amount of caffeine that coffee does? Is this true?
Does yerba mate even have caffeine or is it something different?
Thank you.

i was hearing from a friend that some study showed that regular users of bombillas for mate were getting mouth cancer from the heat of the mate hitting the roof of their mouth over a long period of time. The advice was therefore to let the mate cool down a bit before drinking.

caffeine vs. mateine and addiction in regards to yerba mate

this article taken from:
http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/yer_02.htm

The xanthines draw a lot of attention, chief of which is caffeine. Others are theophylline and theobromine. All of the xanthines have a similar stereo-chemistry but each has its own unique set of properties.

For many years, and even now, in some sectors, yerbamate' was (is) thought to contain caffeine. It turns out that mateine is not identical to caffeine; it differs from caffeine in some rather dramatic ways.

Some members of the scientific community still resort to calling mateine a South American term for caffeine, or to maintaining, in perfect knowledge of the falseness of the assertion, that two substances so similar chemically must have the same properties.

Slowly, they are being forced to acknowledge the distinction between mateine and caffeine.

Modern studies seem to validate the difference between mate' and other xanthines-containing plants, such as guarana.

Stereo-chemical and clinical work on xanthines in the last couple of decades have shown that, though similar in structure, the members of this class have widely varying pharmacology.

In fact, there is only one effect that seems to be shared by all trimethyl xanthines: smooth muscle relaxation. It is this action that makes them with the exception of caffeine, whose smooth muscle relaxant effects are diminished by other side effects, good clinical dilators of the bronchi and hence useful in the treatment of asthma.

Over the past year, I have been giving the Yerba mate' tea to my patients who need to stop using caffeine-containing products for health reasons. I have had good feedback on the results. I like having a healthful substitute for coffee, tea and colas to offer them. K.L.P., M.D.

Chemical assays on mate' have traditionally looked for caffeine, and in such tests mateine, being a simple stereo-isomer of caffeine, would test positive. Until recently nobody has looked at the exact structure of the molecule--and, to my knowledge, nobody in the United States has ever made the attempt.

Researchers at the Free Hygienic Institute of Homburg, Germany, concluded that even if there were caffeine in mate', the amount would be so tiny that it would take 100 tea bags of mate' in a six ounce cup of water to equal the caffeine in a six ounce serving of regular coffee.

They make the rather astute observation that it is obvious that the active principle in yerbamate' is not caffeine! But then, we know for sure it is not caffeine, for caffeine is not present at all.

Mateine, then, has a unique pharmacology and it is unfair to compare it to caffeine (incidentally, guarana may not contain caffeine either, it may contain something that could be called guaraneine, however that substance looks like it is more deleterious than caffeine!).

Mateine appears to possess the best combination of xanthine properties possible.

For example, like other xanthines, it stimulates the central nervous system, but unlike most, it is not habituating or addicting. Likewise, unlike caffeine, it induces better, not worse, attributes of sleep.

It is a mild, not a strong, diuretic, as are many xanthines. It relaxes peripheral blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure, without the strong effect on the medulla and heart exhibited by some xanthines.

We also know that it improves psychomotor performance without the typical xanthine-induced depressant after effects.

Dr. Jose Martin, Director of the National Institute of Technology in Paraguay, writes, New research and better technology have shown that while mate'ine has a chemical constituency similar to caffeine, the molecular binding is different.

Mateine has none of the ill effects of caffeine. And Horacio Conesa, professor at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School, states, There is not a single medical contraindication for ingesting mate'.

Clinical studies show, in fact, that individuals with caffeine sensitivities can ingest mate' without adverse reactions.

The time has come, therefore, to discard the outmoded ideas that
(1) xanthines are all alike,
(2) that yerbamate' contains caffeine, and
(3) that mateine is identical with caffeine. It would be tragic indeed if nature created such a beneficial plant and then, through some bizarre quirk, contaminated it with caffeine.

It is more likely that mate' is, as some say, Natures most perfect beverage, or, as others maintain, the beverage of the Gods.

Summarizing the clinical studies of France, Germany, Argentina and other countries, it appears that we may be dealing here with the most powerful rejuvenator known to man. Unlike the guarana of the Tupi, the coca of the Incas, the coffee of India, or the tea of China, mate' rejuvenates not by the false hopes of caffeine, but simply through the wealth of its nutrients.

A mate tribe! Wow!

So about 7 years ago I was ordering some pizza here in Seattle, minding my own business, well, except that I couldn't help notice a couple of extremely charasmatic lads standing next to me at the counter leafing through notebooks with promotional brochures and photographs. 5 minutes later, they were having lunch with me down the street in the boat that I lived in. Y'see, these guys, Steve & Dave, were brothers who had recently formed a company called Guayaki Yerba Mate and were now driving their van up the coast promoting it. They had me hooked on the concept in no time at all, and then I ended up hooked on the herb as well.

Someone may have already made a plug for Guyaki in this tribe, but if not, and if you don't mind my shameless promotion for my friends, read on.

These guys were taking advantage of academic and family connections to start a business that would not only benifit them, but as they're people of conscience, would benifit the South American people who raised the plant in the rainforest preserves. It's organic, shade-grown, eco-friendly and has a much stronger taste than any commercial brand that's grown on land where the rainforests have been destroyed.
And if you're at Burning Man, you might get lucky enough to run into the guys. Tell 'em Eric from Seattle sent you & they'll pass the gourd your way.

I've read things which say that Mate has caffeine, and things which say it does not. Does anyone here know unequivocably whether Yerba Mate contains caffeine?

curing mates

So in chile they pour a little pisco (sp?) into the mate before using it, swish it around to cure the gourd.
so are there different liquors used to cure mates in other countries? does it seriously change anything if you don't cure a gourd before initial use?
