Help needed with Mate gourd info
I could use some help from the "seasoned" Mate users: I tried seasoning my gourd I got in Argentina, and used mate & lemongrass
mixture for the first 12 hrs after the scraping (not much came up) I noticed that the gourd appeared to have sevetal cracks. (is this normal) I then did the second 12 hours with a Old brazilian matte, and when emptied 1/2 the Gourd had turned an ugly green. Is this normal? Is it safe to use? or did I get ripped off at a tourist shop?
Thank you so much for any help/info you can give me.

Re: Help needed with info on mate gourd
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 3:18 PMsounds fine with me, you only need to scrape if there is a buncha goo.... lots of times there isn't. you seasoned the heck out of this thing.. as long as the cracks are surface, which they probably are, i would just let the darn thing dry then start to use it. if it does leak from those cracks, then yeah, you got ripped off, but i doubt you did..... yeah it's safe to use, gourds are edible. just don't season it anymore, ok? -

Re: Help needed with info on mate gourd
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:06 PMYes, advice given was fine; relax, that's what the teas all about anyway. As for the dark green; it's just the tea soaking into the gourd. Even if you neglect cleaning it out every day, as we do, and it molds it isn't too much to just wash it out with clean water (never soap or hot water or a dishwasher or anything like that.)
