Ok, so we all know that you can drink mate out of a gourd through a bombilla. We know that some people brew it in handy little tea bags. I even use my coffee maker to make up large quantities to have over ice. What I'm wondering is how other people are brewing and using mate. Here's your chance to share your secrets. It's time to share your favorite use for mate. What else do you mix with it? Do you have a mate cookie recipe? Does it keep dogs off your lawn? Might it be a fossil fuel alternative?

Yerba Mate smokes, soda, and more
Fri, January 30, 2004 - 6:15 PMHere's a couple-
I once flavored a hand rolled tobacco cigarette with yerba mate and it was better than any clove I have ever smoked. I had that same rich, flavorful smoke as a clove, but it wasn't harsh! It was just magnificent. I must temper that comment by owning up to the fact that I had been eating green cookies all night, so I may have to try that again in a more objective state of mind.
I have also been thinking about creating Yerba Mate soda-- ever since I discovered that soda is really just strong tea, syrup, and bubbly water. I have been thinking how to do it and I'm about ready to give it a try-- I'll keep you posted.
My favorite coffee shop int he world: The Good Cup in Santa Barbara, makes something called a Chewbaca-- A full cup of yerba with chai powder mixed in. That's a great kick.
As for my usual morning yerba, it's usually a cuppa hot water with three teabags and some hunnay. It's great with some rice milk thrown in there too. -

Re: Yerba Mate - many ways of using the yerba
Fri, February 27, 2004 - 6:56 AMhere i share with you two ways i use yerba mate beside
drinking from gourd with bombilla or da french press.
occasionally place the mate in a tea-egg (?) [it is a small closed container with holes all around it] and let it sit in wine or bear before consuming the liquid
when i make rice, instead of water will use the tea of yerba mate, same for preparing soups. while surely will cook away some of the 196 nutritive ingredients, surely some remains from the yerba. -

Re: Yerba Mate - many ways of using the yerba
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:12 PMWhy yes! Yerba Mate Tea Gourd Greenies I call them and have the whole recipe here www.yerbamateteagourd.com/recipes.php. The really decadent thing is to make two layers: one with coffee flavor and the other with yerba and then ice it over with chocolate. The only way to improve upon that [I suppose] would be to use doctored butter as well--but I leave that up to your imagination.
Be careful--as my habit is to consume any sweet with a nice mate and, if you do so, you may be a bit overstimulated. I recommend milk if you need to be coherent shortly after eating them. Enjoy!

Sun, July 11, 2004 - 2:18 PMBooze...? Apparently the kids in Formosa, Argentina to avoid getting hassle from the cops when they're hanging around drinking on street corners (kinda like the botellón that used to happen in Madrid) they just filled their thermoses with beer or wine - problem solved! No idea how it tastes though -

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:19 PMYes again! Making a traditional mate dulce (sweet mate with sugar) and pouring a dash of good whiskey over it before the hot water is excellent. I give you my link as a matter of shameless self-promotion and goodwill... www.yerbamateteagourd.com/serving.php
We learned this recipe from Tio Pancho--when we went to visit him in his typewriter repair shop in La Pampa and, upon seeing him with the whiskey bottle, asked him what he was up to. One, of course, doesn't have much to do in a type writer repair shop these days!
Cheers!

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Sun, March 28, 2004 - 2:44 PMNo...no cookie/mixed-drink recipes yet (although it might be nice with tequila, spiced rum, or brandy). I tend to use loose tea in a French press or single-cup filter (I used to have a percolator made specifically for tea, but the teapot broke, dammit), and sweeten it with turbinado sugar.
And there's a commercial product that I've developed a taste for: SoBe Fuerte. It's yerba with orange and mango juice and guarana.

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 11:34 PMAt the bar I work at we do a mate-vodka infusion.
with pinapple juice, a little 7 up it's called a buzz bomb
with red bull it's called crack.
even better is a mate mind eraser -
in a tall collins glass - Ice - shot of mate-vodka - about a half shot of Kahlua layered ontop of the vodka and a float of soda water. Place long straw in bottom and suck until it's gone... then bzzzzzz.
We also usually keep an air pot full of the tea. It's really usefull on long shifts.
The whole staff is hooked and rather evangelical.

Sun, November 28, 2004 - 11:10 AMstolen ideas from Mate Factor in Manitou Springs, CO--- with grape juice (how I learned to love the green taste) peach juice or apple juice...organic of course.
I like it as a mate-lemonade.
I HAVE used the rinsings of the french press on plants and they LOVE it. Better results than coffee grounds. -

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Tue, January 25, 2005 - 4:36 PMI brew my mate in a ceramic pot. And strain it when I poor a cup out.
I mix all kinds of herbs with it.
Ashwaaganda is a very nice herb to mix with it.
Peppermint of course.
Gotu Kola is another nice one. Dont add to much of this. It tends to turn bitter/sour after it sets out a few hours.
Astragalas is a good one to add.
Ginger! and or lemon.
Maca is another great herb to mix!
have fun. -

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 10:16 PMYerba Mate Chai Goat Milk Latte:
first, put a bunch of handfuls of yerba mate in a jar with enough cold water to completely cover it so it starts seeping, let it sit and wait,
then, boil up a huge vat of licorice root, (along with other herbs like astragalus and oregon grape root,) for about 5-10 mechanical minutes, then turn it down to low and pour in a bunch of raw goat milk, stevia (herbal sweetener), cardamon, nutmeg, a little ginger power, and then stir in the steeped yerba mate.
let it sit for a few moments, then strain into a cup and ENJOY -
heavenly. i promise. -

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 3:04 PMThere is a classic way to drink mate at the north of Argentina, just pour cold orange juice.
I love to drink mate with warm milk, and if you want mate-soda, just change water for club soda. I love to put brown sugar on it, just to please my sweet tooth.
I been drinking mate since I was a child with my grandparents back in Argentina, and the true it's that I keep drinking mate just to remember them, I love the flavor and everything, but mate it's more a tradition, that’s why we do it, to share a moment with friends, or perhaps to make a moment eternal. My grandparents are gone, but every morning their souls sit down with me and share mate.
Thanks for reading.

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Sun, April 10, 2005 - 9:58 AMmy sweetie uses fresh squeezed citrus, usually grapefruit, and a chunk of crystallized ginger.
we also have aguave nectar and Madhava honey, raw, fro sweetening, which is about 1/3 of the time (as i said, I used grape and other sweet juices in my cold mate)

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:27 PMI liked your post. The mate is a soul drink and binds us with feelings to those close to us. Then, when I'm alone... maybe I pour "Squirt" and ice on the leaves on a hot day for a blasphemous version of Terere! jeje! Chau!

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 12:15 PMIn a french press, before adding hot water, add just enough cold water to make a green sludge, let soak for 30-60 seconds, this releases minerals and vitamins that hot water can not. Then I add hot, steep for 1-2 minutes at the most, them press and serve quickly. Add honey and soy or half/half sometimes.
MMMMMMMMMMM.

Terere with diferent herbs
Thu, April 14, 2005 - 5:11 PMTerere is like mate, but cold and with other herbs. It is tipical from paraguay.
I drink terere at the office almost every day. Depending on the mood, with lemon, mint leaves, ginger or citronela. There are also some pre mixed products in the local market that are gaining notoriety, most of them mix mint and boldus.
The primary requirement is that the water should be really cold. Usually a mix 60 % water 40 % Ice and the mixture of smashed herbs in a termic container. Serv in the "guampa" drink with the "bombilla". -
-
Re: Terere with diferent herbs
Mon, May 2, 2005 - 3:16 PMin regards to the tea bags, does anyone else out there think that they suck? i had a mate latte made for me at a coffee stand they used tea bags--i asked for 2 bags because i thought it would be weak, but it came out tasting really nasty. not sure why...but it seems that Yerba Mate wants to be free to float in the hot water.

Re: 101 uses for Yerba Mate
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 11:46 PMi like to drink my mate cold with a bombilla. i usually add some rooibos as well, and have found that fresh lemon grass from the garden makes a great addition. other favorites are licorice root and a TINY touch or cayenne pepper. by drinking it cold i get the same flavor with quite a few cups, thus increasing the use of a small amount of mate and keeping myself well hydrated.
i have also found that a pinch of used mate (cold) will help some houseplants root in water faster
