I just found out this morning that there's a native holly in North Carolina (and elsewhere in the Southeast) similar to mate- a North American caffeine plant. Yippee!!!!! I'm going to try to acquire some, not sure if it's harvestable at this time of year or if I have to wait till warmer months. I think we're all fired up about growing some here in my community.
Supposedly the vomit-inducing aspect has to do with consuming the berries, not the tea itself. Wikipedia has a little bit about that, but I've read more contemporary stuff about it tonight that said that it's a pleasant tea resembling mate.

Re: Native north american 'mate'- Yaupon
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 3:03 PMI've actually been very interested in this plant as of recent. I'm ready to try the famed "black drink".
I originally stumbled across it while researching Guayusa, yet another cousin of our blessed yerba, that is commonly used as an aya admixture.
Description from Maya Ethnobotanicals:
"Guayusa is used by people of the Amazon basin to make an energizing tea and as a herbal medicine. It also has the interesting effect of inducing lucid dreaming. For this reason, it is known as the "watchman's plant", as even when sleeping you are aware of your external surroundings. For those interested in shamanic dreaming this is certainly the plant to explore. It is used along with Ayahuasca to help ease bitterness, to stay awake during Ayahuasca ceremonies, and to help prevent hangover effects"
and of course the wiki, which originally turned me on to the black drink:

I have obtained a bit of this medicine but have yet to bioassay. I will post my experience when I do.
The Yaupon definitely sounds worthy of investigation, and I am looking forward to hearing more about your progress in obtaining and testing this medicine. Please do keep us posted and good luck on your quest.
