I make a vodka infusion with a cup and a half to two cups of bulk mate’ to a liter of vodka.
We make a mate’ mind eraser by layering the mate’ vodka with Kaluha and soda water in a tall Collins glass. On slower nights we’ll do two or three while working and it never fails to give us all a happy little buzz that certainly can’t be accounted for by caffeine alone. It feels like the beginning of a very weak hit of E.
I’ve poked around on the Internet and haven’t found any good answers.
Any ideas here folks?

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 4:37 AMIt's probably the soda water, those bubbles go right into your brain. *sarcasm*
I've done something similar with St.John'sWort and gotten a buzz, or maybe not a buzz in it's conventional sense, more like a serene peace of mind similar to hours of meditation. Not like you're tired, more like you're happy. It washes away the depressive thoughts.
I stopped doing that a while back though, I had to use more and more each time, so it didn't feel that fun anymore. Luckily it isn't physiologically addictive, so there's no problem to stop. -

I too have played around with Mate' infused vodka, but it had more of a mellow, knock-me-out kind of effect. Perhaps more Mate' this time.
I heated the vodka, added the Mate', sealed it, wrapped it in black plastic, and then left it in a sunny window for two weeks. Filtering the Mate' out with a screen then coffee filter totally sucked and made a terrible mess.
Did you do anything special?
What did you do with the Mate' after pulling the vodka out?
Any good filtering ideas?
interesting about the addiction... I find the Mate' similar in that I start needing more and more, so end up having to take weeks at a time off.
much mate' love,

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Fri, September 23, 2005 - 3:33 PMOK here's how did it last and it seemed to go pretty well.
I took (250 ml) of dry Mate' and added it to what was left in a 1.75 of BomBay Saphire Gin (about 500ml). I left it in the window and shook it twice a day. Last night I had one happy martini. My GF hates the taste. I couldn't get enough. I thought a touch of Cola really cut the alcohol cringe, but then I added another touch and thought it way to sweet. I tend no to add anything but water and a bombilla to my Mate' so I guess mileage will vary.
So again that was:
one part alcohol,
one part Mate',
one part whateverelse is in liquor these days
for one week (it likely doesn't take this long)
filter and enjoy,

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Mon, September 26, 2005 - 8:58 PMI simply threw it in a used cherry jar and let it sit over night.
about two cups of Mate' per liter of vodka if you use a higher ratio it'll give you the shits ((like a hit of e) you'll have to go once really bad and all of a sudden then you wont be bothered again))
I strain it through a regular flour sifter and press the mate' against the screen to get the last drops out. Coffee filteres don't work as there is just too much fine fluff in the mixture. If the setament bothers you let the bottle settle out for a couple of days and slowly pour or sifon the clear liquor off the top.
The Mate' Mind Eraser"
Tall Collin's Glass filled with crushed ice.
One shot of Mate' infused Vodka.
Layer a half shot to a full shot of Kahlua by letting it tricle down the side of the glass or over the back of a spoon.
Float another layer of soda water on top over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass.
Stick a long straw in and suck it down in one go.
You get the green tea flavor of the Vodka Mate' infusion first, the sweet of the Kaluah next and then a palate cleaning soda last. And a nice, pleasant , happy buzz about five minutes later.
go figure.
If you really want to mess with yourself throw a couple of tablespoons of Kava Kava in a liter of vodka and let that sit for a couple of days and use the above instructions...

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Mon, September 26, 2005 - 9:02 PMHaving made several dozen batches of this (I used to serve it in the bar I used to own) I found that the Mate' leaches most of its goodness in to the vodka after one or two hours. No need to wait too long if you're bored on a friday night. -

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Mon, October 24, 2005 - 9:39 PMI love the idea and I did run with it... thanks for the great drink! I took loose mate and then put a quarter of a vodka bottle and shook it each day. I believe that the mate leaves the leaves after a few hours becase of cold infusions.
Enjoy it's the best! -

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Tue, October 25, 2005 - 3:50 PMDon't do this with Gin!
I'm a Gin lover and found it not nearly as tasty as with Vodka -

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Mon, October 31, 2005 - 10:56 AMhi! i am new to this tribe. I am from Argentina, so I drink mate all the time, all kinds of mate.
prisoners are usually not allowed to drink alcohol so what families do down there is to spray yerba with vodka and let it dry. then you take it to your loved one who is in jail who just serves mate the traditional way and after a while gets drunk
I have not tried it myself.

Re: Yerba Mate Vodka Infusion – Why the happy buzz?
Wed, March 15, 2006 - 12:08 AMOk ...Ok... New Yerba Mate cocktail drinks are needed!
I now, do not go out dancing without at least one Yerba Mate drink under my belt! My last creation was Vanilla Sky Vodka with Guayaki concentrate! But the infusion is still the the best.
Anyone tried anything new??? -
